Your Hip, Daddy-O
Dad completed his hip surgery last night and all went smoothly. The surgeon is one of the most experienced at replacing hip replacements that failed. He said it was challenging but that it worked out well. Dad may get to come home from the hospital on Thursday, though he will have to stay under nursing care for a couple of weeks. He says he is very relieved to have this taken care of. It was causing him a lot of pain, and some anxiety since the replacement replacement is a more tricky operation. He has a patent patient-on-demand pain control system. With this the patient can press a button when he or she starts to feel uncomfortable and a little dose of morphine is injected into his IV drip. Apparently this not only helps patients be more pain-free, but also uses less morphine that the traditional method of calling nurse, nurse eventually responds, nurse goes to get morphine (and possibly also permission), nurse eventually returns and administers morphine to patient who by this time is in considerable pain and needs a higher dose to overcome it. | | Sunday, June 8th, 2008 | | 10:45 pm |
Gardening
Went over to B's to help with gardening. On a hillside made mainly of lots of little rocks. Tried to improve the dirt/rock ratio, raked it as smooth as reasonable, broadcast grass seed and clover seed. Watered. Nothing happened. Big disappointment. Will check back next week. Dad has his operation tomorrow. Hip replacement replacement. I'll go down and keep Mom company. Dad will be in the hospital for a few days. He hopes to be discharged by Friday. I'm taking the week off to be available. More tomorrow. | | Saturday, June 7th, 2008 | | 11:58 pm |
Saturday . . .
A day to recover, to do things that are a little off the critical path. Wash clothes. Nap in comfy chair. Surf web. Fiddle with Salesforce. Have a meeting with business associate at nice coffee place that for some reason isn't findable on the internet. Meet a Zoroastrian. Watch "National Treasure II" (mildly entertaining but nothing special). Try to work on newsletter and not make much progress . . . but there's always tomorrow. | | 8:25 am |
Green Scene
Recently I have been immersed in a sea of green. Green technology, green businesses, sustainable practices, energy saving, etc. Trying to build a business around it. Hectic. Check out this blog. Not enough time, high degree of chaos, creative ferment. Very exciting and fun. Trying to build something of value. Much networking. For example yesterday lunched with the actress Estella Perez. Hope this will lead to Hollywood connections and perhaps movie deal. That's my fallback. Current Mood: awake | | Thursday, June 5th, 2008 | | 10:22 pm |
Ramblin'
Not much of note today. Peered into computer, talked on phone, etc. Played with Salesforce software (as a service) we are trying out. Watched "les Diaboliques", which I had only seen once many years ago. What a great film. I'm mystified how it could be remade, as it was in 1996, since everyone would know how it ended, which is the best part. But of course when I watched it this time I knew how it ended, but I still enjoyed every minute. As a matter of fact I recommend you watch it a second time to see all the clues. (But don't watch the Sharon Stone version--I hear it stinks.) | | Thursday, December 13th, 2007 | | 5:40 pm |

Re-read books
I've been reading books longer than most of you guys (but maybe that just means I'm a slow reader . . . ?), but I probably don't read as many on an annual basis. Here are some I've read more than twice: The Aubrey-Maturin novels of Patrick O'Brian. Yes they are historical fiction, set during the Napoleonic wars. Their main delight for me is the perfect recreation of time and scene, with language, attitudes, characters and details that put you in another era. (I was going to quote a passage to convince you, but each is so perfect (if given in adequate length) that I couldn't choose, and my fingers are too lazy to type as much as I'd like.) Ender's Game, of course The Lord of the RingsThen there are the books I have read repeatedly to my children, such as The Hobbit, Beyond the Paw-Paw Trees, and Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, but I don't read them any more. Perhaps if my grandchildren lived closer . . . . I have read most of The Bible and the English translation of the Qur'an several times. I'm sure there are some others, but I can't call them to mind. Feckless
"Feckless" = "1. Lacking purpose or vitality; feeble or ineffective. 2. Careless and irresponsible." I certainly am feeling feckless today (def. 1). I am totally lacking in feck. My feck done got up and went. I am feck- (feck minus). Not enough feck to shake a stick at. If I had any less feck, I would be feck-negative. Zero feck -- that's my state. If you doubled my current feck level, I still wouldn't have any. Anybody got any feck? Cause I could certainly use some! Q: "Where's your feck?" A: "I give up! I don't have one!" (I could very well be the most feckless person on the face of the Earth.) Look, Ma: no feck! I'm the feckleast. Feck . . . need some! Overdrawn at the feck bank. "No-Feck Dave". Where are the fecks of yesteryear? If I were more feckfull I could have put up a more purposed, vital post. Even half-feckfull would be an improvement. Non-feckfulness fills my days with . . . well it doesn't fill them with feck. Anybody seen my feck? Afeckacity sucks. I been de-fecked. Defeculation is. When they were handing out feck, I musta been out taking a whizz. My feck's off ('tis but a scratch). While you're up, could you get me some feck?
